THE BARE LANGUAGE OF ART

BERAHNA MASSOUM

ABOUT BERAHNA

Massoum decided at a young age to be called “Berahna”, which is his artist’s name and has the meaning of “being unveiled” or very „direct“. A risky name, that caused a lot of attention especially in Afghanistan’s more conservative society, where he was born. It’s not only about physical exposure, but moreover about an inner revelation, a sheer and genuine mentality, that is reflected and expressed in his artwork.

His work as a sculptor often starts with a conversation, in which he really wants to get to know the person. “The willingness to have a portrait made by me or an artist in general, shows a lot of self- consciousness”, says Berahna.

His portraits are almost alive, they are not mere illustrations, no masks. Instead, Berahna unveils those facades and penetrates to the very essence of being. A truth, lightly touched in the core and expressed in every fine, clay modeled nuance of the portrait. The artist communicates about his created works of art in a "naked language" that manifests itself as a revelation of the soul.
